This book depicts in a fictional kind of narration a set of historical events and incidents that took place on the bank of the Blue Nile in one of the most powerful states of Abyssinia, North East Africa, the Christian state of Alwa, and specifically in the Capital city of Soba. Events take place in the Middle Ages, during which the region was the refugee camp Arabs and early Muslim sought, migrating from their original state in Mecca. They sought and enjoyed the protection of the state’s just ruler, Al Najashy.

The Author depicts the city, providing a careful and detailed description of life there, the markets, slave trade, houses and how disagreement between the Church and the palace erupted and aggravated even further reaching war that placed the safety of the entire state in jeopardy. The role of the King’s translator, Delmar, and his grandson after him, named Sisi, was keeping the secrets of the state and supporting the king as well as spoiling whatever plots orchestrated by the church ministers and magicians against him. The writer also lists a number of events coherently interrelated and rich in suspense and anticipation.

The story of the young Abd al-Sami al-Maghribi, who lived a homeless childhood in the Maghreb during the fall of Andalusia into the hands of the Castilians and the escape of its people from it. The boy lived and witnessed the events of the epidemic that killed thousands in the Maghreb region and the death of his parents with that disease. Then after he grew up a little he decided to migrate eastwards, so he did until he reached the ancient Soba region and was present during the beginnings of the establishment of the Blue Sultanate and the State of Funj, where he worked as a writer and land registrar for the Sultan Amara. Young Abdul Sami described the social and political patterns of life in the region of Fazugli, Sennar, and central Sudan in details, as well as the trade movement and the influx of scholars and aspirants to the nascent state, the Sultan’s Council, and the traditions of the government. The novel is full of events and surprises and is not without tragedy.
